Participants of all ages came together to explore the vibrant world of Samba — diving into its history, its origins in resistance and resilience during slavery in Brazil, and powerful Jewish parallels like Miriam’s joyful drumming at the Exodus from slavery. We learned not only about the instruments that shape Samba’s electrifying sound, but how each one carries its own voice and story.
With instruments in hand, we broke into groups to learn the distinct rhythm of each drum — practicing how to listen, watch, and communicate so that separate beats could become one unified rhythm section.
When we reunited as a full ensemble, led by Rob, the room came alive.
And something magical happened. We balanced our sounds, made space for one another, took turns lifting up each rhythm, and eventually blended into one vibrant, pulsing song. There was dancing. There were smiles. And there was that beautiful moment when everyone landed together on the very same beat.
It was more than a drumming workshop. It was a living lesson in connection, resilience, listening, and community. 💛
