Yom Kippur Breakout Sessions for 5786

TimeSessionDescription
1 – 2 pmCritical Theories of Anti-Semitism Professor Jonathan Judaken
Special guest Jonathan Judaken will be talking about his book of the same title as the session, obviously a crucial topic for our times. Jonathan Judaken is the Goldstein Professor of Jewish History and Thought at Washington University in St. Louis. He has published more than 50 academic articles on the history of existentialism, critical theory, anti-Semitism, racism, and post-Holocaust French Jewish thought and has written, edited, or co-edited 7 books.
2:15 – 3:15 pmCreating and Imparting your LegacyAl Rose
Standing on the shoulders of our ancestors is a core Jewish value and principle.  Longtime CRC member Al Rose will suggest ways to create a plan to leave a meaningful spiritual, legal and financial legacy for future generations. Al, now retired, is a lawyer who specialized in estate planning for 45 years with an emphasis on the unique wishes and needs of each client’s family.
2:15 – 3:15 pmThe ScapegoatBecky Nelson-Zoole
The strangest element of the biblical Yom Kippur ritual was the ritual of the two goats: one goat was to be sacrificed, and the other was sent into the desert. Early translations of the Torah called this second goat that escaped the “scapegoat”, and today the term has come to mean blaming someone else for our troubles. But the original scapegoat was a symbol of accepting responsibility! Some Jewish scholars see the biblical ritual of the two goats as a model of the ethical struggles we all face, and the fate of the scapegoat as a demonstration of the transformational potential of Yom Kippur today. Explore how our tradition calls us to take the first step towards transforming the world by transforming ourselves.
3:30 – 4:30 pmJonah: The Colbert Report of the Prophets Rabbi Daniel Bogard
On the holiest afternoon of the year, we crack open one of the snarkiest books in the Bible. Join Rabbi Daniel Bogard for a Yom Kippur text study of Jonah—a prophetic satire that skewers self-righteousness and surprises us with hope.

Why satire on Yom Kippur? What can a sulky, reluctant prophet possibly teach us about repentance, resilience, and healing in a fractured world? Come find out. No background required—just curiosity and a willingness to laugh and wrestle with big questions. This session is pure Rabbi Daniel: engaging, irreverent, and deeply meaningful.
3:30 – 4:30 pmMoving Body and Soul Sarah Anne Patz
Yom Kippur invites us to turn inward, to listen more deeply—not only with our minds, but with our whole selves. In this workshop, we explore breath, stillness, and movement as a form of embodied prayer. Using the Authentic Movement practice and with no experience necessary and nothing to get “right,” we listen for the wisdom that lives within, allowing our bodies to become vessels for insight, release, and connection on this day of return.

These sessions are not live-streamed.

* Yom Kippur Family Service will also be taking place from 2:15-3:15 pm, in the CRC Sanctuary. Yizkor and Neila will begin at 4:30 pm.
