Shande means Shame, There Is None.
Shande Means Shame, There Is None is a Jewish community program exploring mental health through the compassionate values and traditions of Judaism. Convened by Rabbi James Stone Goodman, the program grew out of Jewish Attention to Mental Illness St. Louis (JAMI StL), which began with Falling Through the Cracks, a series of community forums focused on bringing mental health and the challenges associated with mental illness to the center of community’s agenda.
Today, Shande Means Shame, There Is None continues that work by creating space for learning, conversation, and connection around mental health through a Jewish lens.
At the heart of the program is a simple Jewish commitment and a big tent approach: there is no one outside the camp—we are all part of the Jewish community. We seek to overcome the shande (shame) and stigma associated with mental illness by welcoming the stranger, practicing compassion, and advocating for those who may not be able to advocate for themselves.
Join us Sundays at 1:00 p.m. on Zoom.
