Report to the CRC Congregation (May 19, 2022)
The CRC Voting Rights Chavurah’s mission is to protect and expand the right to vote in Missouri and nationally. As a new organization, we were immediately thrown into the fire – having to respond to anti-democractic legislation being pushed in this year’s Missouri Legislature.
The good news, working with the MO Voter Protection Coalition and Missouri Jobs with Justice (and with support from many of you), we were able to prevent the destruction of our 100-year-old Missouri Constitutional right to use direct democracy (the initiative petition) to petition our government when our elected representatives and governor fail to act.
In the last week of the legislative session, supportive senators (particularly Sen. Jill Schupp and Sen. Brian Williams) filibustered the bill (HJR 79) until the sponsors withdrew it from consideration. Thanks to those of you who testified, wrote letters, phoned, and lobbied.
The bad news, unfortunately, is that the other bill, designed to require all voters to produce an unneeded and discriminatory photo ID was additionally loaded up with last minute/undebated amendments designed to make it harder for citizens to vote. That bill (HB 1878) passed and now awaits the Governor’s signature. Our Chavurah intends to continue to register voters while we determine the next focus for our work. Please join us by signing up on the CRC web site (https://www.centralreform.org/events/voting-rights-chavurah/).
As a member of the CRC Voting Rights Chavurah, you will receive basic information about democracy issues and opportunities to participate in addressing these critical issues. If you would like to become more involved, the CRC Chavurah meets every other Wednesday evening from 5 to 6 pm on Zoom to plan our activities. We would love to have you join those meetings.
