Jan. 5th & 12th: In this two-part Zoom series, Jill Delston will discuss themes from her recent book, Medical Sexism (Lexington Books, 2019). How can we learn to identify, diagnose, and solve problems of medical sexism? Medical sexism, which imposes a gendered hierarchy in the doctor’s office, can lead to illness, injury and even death. For example, why are birth control prescription refills tied to unrelated tests like pelvic exams and Pap tests? Jill will discuss the role of cancer screenings in contraception access. What are your rights as a patient? She will discuss how medical sexism can undermine patient autonomy and lead to medical malpractice. How can contraception policy inform the abortion debate? Overriding patient autonomy in abortion cases is often justified by the fetus. But are the same attitudes, behaviors, and treatments present in situations where no fetus exists? In this series, Jill will draw on these and other case studies in feminist bioethics.
Jan. 19th: Rabbi Daniel on Environmental Torah. Join Rabbi Daniel Bogard as we delve into a Torah of climate and environmental justice in preparation for the birthday of the trees, Tu B’Shvat.
