Let’s give an enthusiastic welcome to Blake Strode, Executive Director of ArchCity Defenders! While justice is a top priority issue for many CRC congregants, most of us are unfamiliar with ArchCity Defenders, a St. Louis-based civil rights law firm; even fewer of us know Blake Strode, the man who heads it. Both are impressive.
Strode grew up in the St. Louis area, then attended the University of Arkansas and Harvard Law School. Not long after the 2014 death of Michael Brown, Strode read a paper about the over-policing of people of color in North St. Louis County. That paper, published by ArchCity Defenders, was Strode’s introduction to the organization, and Strode soon found himself back in his hometown with a Fellowship to do housing-related work.
Since then, Strode focused on closing the justice gap between those with money and those without. He and his colleagues filed—and won—landmark cases against the jailing of poor people because they were unable to pay court fines and fees. In addition, Strode helped build the organization’s litigation unit, targeting police misconduct and inhumane jail conditions. In January 2018, at the age of 30, Strode was named ArchCity Defenders’ new Executive Director.
Blake Strode’s talk will cover a more complete picture of what ArchCity Defenders does and provide some ideas for how congregants might get involved. We look forward to seeing you at our next Awaken Shabbat.
