Central Reform Congregation

About CRC's Social Responsibility Circle

Social Responsibility has been a core value at Central Reform Congregation since its inception. The Social Responsibility Circle adopted the following statement of principles in 1998.

  1. To develop projects and programs that utilize CRC's buildings, facilities and location within the City of St. Louis for the benefit of the city, the community and its residents.

  2. To develop projects and programs designed to meet the needs of CRC's members and to educate ourselves.

  3. To develop projects and programs designed to respond to suffering (including hunger, homelessness, neglect, and physical, emotional and substance abuse) and that strive for Tikkun Olam, repair of the world.

  4. To develop projects and programs designed to encourage member participation and to develop social consciousness and awareness by CRC members of all ages.

  5. To develop projects and programs that enable CRC members to partner with other religious institutions, community groups and agencies.

  6. To develop projects and programs that build on CRC's history of concern for race relations as well as the values of diversity and inclusion, without regard to ethnicity or sexual orientation.

  7. To develop projects and programs that are non-sexist and non-hierarchal

In 1999-2000 CRC received the Danforth Foundation "I DARE YOU" Award in recognition of CRC's commitment and involvement in social action efforts. The goal now is to enhance this fine record and involve as many of our congregants as possible in activities of Tikkun Olam.

The following are some of the main initiatives of the Circle:

Friday Night Social Responsibility Shabbat: On the second Friday night of each month, the Circle sponsors an informational program integrated into the Friday night Shabbat Service. Click here for information on past and upcoming Social Responsibility Shabbat programs.

Cote Brilliante Joint Venture: Ten year partnership between CRC and Cote Brilliante Church.

Year of Living Responsibly: Monthly service activities geared toward families and friends

Joint Partnerships: CRC is an active member of numerous coalitions working to improve life for people living in our community, including the Jewish Social Action Network (JSAN), Holy Ground, and Metropolitan Congregations United (MCU).
