CHILDREN IN NEED OF MENTORS

Discovering Options is a Saint Louis based agency that provides at-risk students with supportive and life enriching programs to prevent drug abuse. We deliver our after school PREP programs (Promoting Responsibility through Edu-cation and Preparation) out of the First Unitarian Church in the Central West End (across the street from CRC). We serve Saint Louis public school students living with risk factors such as family conflict, poverty, a lack of commitment to school, behavior problems, and neighborhoods where drugs are easily accessible. Our mission is to expand the options these students have, and to help them avoid drug use and other self-destructive behavior.

In order to achieve our goals we need your support. After a child graduates from the PREP program they are matched with a mentor. A mentor is an individual who commits to 20 weekly sessions with an at-risk 4th or 5th grader. We have 12 children who were promised mentors that have been left behind and it is urgent that they be matched with a mentor. Discovering Options invites you to share a bit of your time, life experience and humor with a child learning to make healthy choices.

We match children with mentors based on common interests. We offer flexible scheduling, mentor assistance, mentor meetings and outings. We are here to support you in every aspect of your new relationship. Please call Miss Kelly Lachajczyk at 314.721.8116 and tell her you will help save a child from social and academic failure.

Mentoring is just one of the many ways you can get involved with Discovering Options. If you would like to learn more about the impact Discovering Options is making in the community please attend our annual gala, Cirque de la Vie, held at the Four Seasons on July 12th 2008. You could also become a sponsor, attend our annual golf tournament, make a donation or tell your friends to visit our website at www.discoveringoptions.org
