Aviya’s Summer to Screen at Holocaust Museum

Sunday, August 29, 2:00 pm

The Sandra and Mendel Rosenberg Holocaust Museum and Learning Center’s free monthly film series will feature Aviya’s Summer at the Jewish Federation Kopolow Building. The film is based on the memoir of Gila Almagor, one of Israel’s foremost actresses. Almagor was born four months after the death of her father, a Holocaust survivor who was killed by an Arab sniper while working as a policeman in Haifa. Almagor grew up caring for her mother, who was slowly losing her sanity after realizing that all her family in Germany had perished in the Holocaust.

The film tells the story of Aviya, who, as did Almagor and many of her generation, attempts to get her life back to some semblance of “normalcy” in the early years of the State of Israel. Directed by Eli Cohen, this 1988 film has a running time of 91 minutes and will be screened in Hebrew with English subtitles. Introductory remarks will be presented by Leora Gilboa who was born in Israel and is a child of two Survivors. She currently lives in Chesterfield. Gilboa will share her experiences living in the shadow of the Holocaust, and facilitate a discussion following the film. This program is free; reservations are not required.

For additional information, call 314-442-3714 or email dreich@jfedstl.org. This film is co-sponsored by the Jewish Community Relations Council.
